When most of us die we either get cremated or buried in a standard coffin. But in a suburb of Accra in Ghana, there is a family workshop where they make designer coffins with a difference for they come in designs ranging from planes, birds to fish and even cars. All are hand crafted from Ghana's Odum tree and hand painted by artists. Recent bespoke coffins have included a laptop styled coffin for a computer technician and a
cigar shaped coffin for the family of the departed to honour the
deceased's love of smoking!
The coffins are a fairly
recent tradition of the Ga tribe that inhabit the coast off Ghana
and the crafting of these fantasy coffins started some fifty years
ago when a coffin was created for a fisherman in the shape of a
fish. Today tourists flock to the workshops to see the coffins being
made and they have also appeared in exhibitions across the world.
This video shows many of these designer coffins in all their
creative splendour!
